• Endorsements from Pennsylvania Papers // Clinton Catches One

Endorsements may not make an impact on voters, but it is also interesting to know where each candidate gets support.

This week, after a string of endorsements of her rival Barack Obama from Pennsylvania’s major newspapers, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton picked up an endorsement from the Daily Pennsylvanian, a University of Pennsylvania student paper:

“While Obama’s charisma far outshines that of Sen. Hillary Clinton, her public service, political experience and tenacity tell us not only ‘Yes we can’ but also ‘How we can.’ As such, we endorse Clinton for the Democratic Party’s nomination for president…Our endorsement is not a rejection of Obama’s leadership qualities. But choosing the president of the United States is too important a decision to make based on hope alone the. After finishing his term in the Senate and better showing us what he can do for the American people, Obama could one day be a remarkable president. Clinton, on the other hand, is ready to lead this nation now. A successful champion for change, her experience in the Senate and as first lady gives her a better understanding of how Washington works. She has the ability to turn policy into reality. And her mastery of causes central to the Democratic Party’s platform makes her better suited to challenge presumptive Republican nominee John McCain.”

The upcoming Pennsylvania primary results will be closely examined as Clinton tries to stem Obama’s lead in delegate and popular votes.

Among major newspapers in Pennsylvania, Obama has been endorsed by all. In February, The Philadelphia Inquirer provide support for the Illinois senator. The latest newspapers to back up Obama are both Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Harrisburg’s Patriot-News and the Times Tribune from Scranton - a surprise endorsement considering Clinton’s personal ties to Scranton.

Despite having leads in the polls among PA voters, Clinton has not been able to clinch even one endorsement from a major Pennsylvanian newspaper. Her appeal to blue collared voters, such as those in Scranton, did not sway the Times Tribune.

      Times Tribune, April 13, 2008:

…Mr. Obama has energized an entire generation of voters that, for the most part, otherwise had checked out of political participation. That, at least, portends a new approach to governance that can help to dissipate the political miasma that has engulfed Washington at least since the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is an extremely talented politician who already has secured a unique place in U.S. political history. She repeatedly has proved her political death notices to be premature. She also has demonstrated that she is a master of public policy. And — this is not and should not be taken lightly in an area that prides itself on family and a tradition of supporting its own — the Rodham family has deep Scranton roots. But Mrs. Clinton also is a political lightning rod. There is little doubt that a second Clinton presidency would further the deep divisiveness that characterizes American politics — a divisiveness that dug itself deep during the Clinton presidency, and even deeper during the Bush-Cheney years.
The first task for the next president is to get past that. And it might not be possible if the presidential cycle goes Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton.
