UPDATE 4/29/07 4:09 pm EST: Scandalized Sen. Larry Craig Resigns from Top Senate Committee Posts & GOP LEADERS CALL FOR RESIGNATION from SENATE

Craig (R-Idaho) stepped down as the top Republican on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee and two other subcommittees today, just as three GOP leaders call for Craig’s complete resignation from the Senate.

Like I said yesterday, despite Craig’s rosy attitude of his political career in light of his arrest for lewd conduct in the men’s bathroom and allegations of closeted homosexuality- his party is forcing him out as they await an investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee.

Republican Rep. Pete Hoekstra of Michigan said:

(Craig) also represents the Republican party, and I believe he should step down, as his conduct throughout this matter has been inappropriate for a U.S. senator.”

4/28/07: GOP Sen. Larry Craig Denies He’s Gay After Arrest

Finally some news on a hellishly slow news day. I for one will be glad when August is over.

Defending himself after pleading guilty to engaging in lewd acts in a men’s bathroom earlier this month, Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) denied homosexuality in a news conference today.

Craig asked for forgiveness from Idahoans for his arrest in June after police found him in a men’s bathroom at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport during an investigation into lewd conduct. Craig initially kept his arrest a secret until he was outed by Roll Call,  a Capitol Hill paper.

I am not gay,” Craig said. “I love my wife, my family. I care about friends and staff and Idaho. I love serving this state … I hope Idahoans will allow me to continue to do that.”

ooohhh…Craig…I don’t know about that…

This is the second time this month that a GOP Senator has had to face questions about his personal lifestyle & ask for forgiveness from his constituents.

Naturally, Republican leaders have already been aggressive trying to clean up Craig’s scandal.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnellannounced the Senate Ethics Committee should launch an investigaton of the senator, stating that the arrest was a “serious matter.”

A third-term senator, Craig, in arguably a cloud of obliviousness, said he will announce next month if he’ll run for re-election. This, of course, assuming his party thinks its’ even an option.  

Idaho state Sen. R. Steven Bair told FOX News Craig was “about done politically.”

Craig was also forced to resign from presidential hopeful Mass. Governor Mitt Romney’s campaign who stated Craig’s arrest was “very disappointing” and that Craig had not lived up to a “level of respect and dignity”.

Craig also accused the media today of attacking his family and then tried to play down his guilty plea.

The (Idaho) Statesman has engaged in this witch hunt,” Craig said. “In pleading guilty, I overreacted in Minneapolis, because of the stress of the Idaho Statesman’s investigation and the rumors it has fueled around Idaho.”

Apparently, this isn’t the first time Craig has been suspected as being a closet homosexual. Rumours of the senator’s sexuality have followed him since his college days and in May a man claimed to have had sex with Craig in a men’s bathroom at Washington, D.C.’s Union Station.”
