Responding to football star Michael Vick’s guilty plea to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge in court Monday, a representative for the animal rights group PETA told RAGMAG that they were pleased with Vick’s admission in court and that a jail sentence is in order.

“I think it goes to show that no amount of money can buy freedom,” said Daphna Nachminovitch, director of PETA’s Domestic Animal Department, in a phone interview with RAGMAG on Monday. ”America loves football but they might love dogs even more.”

Shortly after Vick pleaded guilty he issued an apology saying that he needed to “grow up.” Adding that “I take full responsibility for my actions. Not for one second will I sit right here and point the finger and try to blame anybody else for my actions or what I’ve done.”

Meanwhile, Nachminovitch said she anticipates that Vick will serve jail time for the dogfighting charges, a felony that is illegal in 48 states she said, adding that”no sentence could come close to what the dogs were suffering.”

Editor’s Note:  Nachminovitch said dog fighting was an international epidemic, adding that dogs suffer broken legs and even have their ears torn off as a result. For more information visit PETA.org
