It just “slipped out.”
The excuse given by Ralph Papitto, chairman of Roger Williams University, after dropping “nigger” during a university board meeting in April that ironically discussed how to increase the number of minority members on the board. He admitted to using the slur Monday on WPRO-AM.
During the interview, Papitto apologized saying that it “kind of slipped out,” and added “What else can I do? Kill myself?”
If only it were that easy.
Papitto reportedly used the word referencing the board’s black members. Adding that he never used the slur before, sure buddy. He has since stepped down as chairman after nearly 40 years of (dis) service.
His admission to using the word comes a week after the NAACP buried the N-Word during its national convention in Detroit last week.
It remains unclear whether laying the word to rest is little more than a hopeful gesture in era where racist remarks are still common place in mainstream media.
