• UPDATE: UK Terror Police find suicide note

      Update 6/4/07: CNN reports a letter by one of the men who police say rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into Glasgow’s airport was found today. The letter is clear proof that the attackers intended to kill themselves in a suicide bombing.

      Scottish police today arrested two more men in connection with attempted car bombings in Glasgow and London, totaling 7 arrested since a car bomb was found in London last Friday and another found in Glasgow on Saturday.

      Suspecting al-Qaeda, UK police are conducting a fast-pasted investigation.

      The two men, not believed to be of British origin and ages 28 and 25, were arrested in Paisley, about ten miles west of Glasgow, near the airport where bombers drove a Jeep Cherokee packed with propane gas through the main entrance.

      One of the suspects in custody is Mohammed Asha, 26, a medical doctor whose house in central England — was searched by police today, according to media reports.

      On Friday, a day before the Glasgow airport attack, police in London found two Mercedes packed with propane gas, gasoline and nails. Two men who were in the Jeep at the airport are in custody. The driver, who witnesses said set himself on fire, suffered severe burns and is in critical condition in a Scottish hospital.

      A 26-year-old man was also arrested in Liverpool on Sunday.

      None of the suspects have been formally charged, and police have not released many details of their identities. According to recent anti-terrorism legislation, police can hold suspects for as long as 28 days without charges, with a judge’s approval.

      John Neilson, a senior police official, told a group of Muslims at the Central Mosque in Glasgow: “The people we have in custody came to Scotland a short while ago to seek work. . . . These are not your young people.”
