Supreme Court rules against Affirmative Action

Perhaps the first sign revealing the arguably conservative personality of the new Supreme Court?

The Supreme Court ruled today that schools (in this particular case, grade schools) cannot take steps to assure racially mixed student populations.

In a 5-4 ruling, the court ruled in favor of parents who were battling the criteria used to admit students to schools in two cities where whites and blacks live in mostly segregated neighborhoods.

The schools had had been assigning students to different facilities, sometimes far from home, to ensure racial diversity in areas that lacked diversity in their households..

“Simply because the school districts may seek a worthy goal doesn’t mean that they are free to discriminate on the basis of race to achieve it,” Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority decision.

Rise of the Silver Surfer Sinks

By Joshua Garner

I am an angry critic.

I wasn’t always angry. In fact, before going to see the midnight showing of “Fantastic Four: The Rise of The of the Silver Surfer,” the follow up to the 2005 hit, I was quite forgiving.

I was willing to forgive my disappointment as the original film’s awful script.I was willing to forgive how slow it was, how UNentertaining, unlikable, and awkward the characters were. I was even willing to forgive myself for paying to see the latest film adaptation of a Marvel Comic franchise.

My forgiveness came in the hope that 20th Century Fox and film’s producers had learned their lesson on how to make a superhero film, much like they did with the X2: X-Men United.  But unfortunately, my hope gave way to the nostalgic feeling of anger. As I watched the film I realized it was the summer of 2005 all over again.
Supported by a returning cast and returning troubles, The Rise of the Silver Surfer picks up with a mysterious creation of craters popping up all over the globe followed by bazaar weather patterns. While mayhem spreads across the world, the Fantastic Four are relishing in their new found fame. They’ve changed: they have tans, cameras follow them wherever they go, and Sue (Jessica Alba) and Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffud ) are planning a rooftop wedding.

In the mist of the good times the Silver Surfer appears and ruins the wedding. He’s fast. He’s Cool. He looks like actor Doug Jones but sounds like Laurence Fishburne and MAN can he deliver a one liner. Imagine a bald Ken Doll dipped in silver and like Ken he is anatomically incorrect. The Fantastic Four eventually realize that the Surfer is just a middle man who does little more than prepare meals for an omniscient being called Galactus who feeds on planets. Oh, did I mention the lovable Doctor Doom makes a return?

The film has all the making of an action packed superhero movie but fails to rise to the occasion. You keep waiting for it the fun to begin, but it doesn’t until film credits start rolling.

I left the theatre angry, and a little less forgiving.

Bush Vetoes Stem Cell Bill

bushveto.JPG

In a direct back-slap to the Democratic-led Congress, President Bush vetoed a bill this afternoon to expand federally funded embryonic stem cell research.

It’s his third veto (so far) and drives home this message : the White House refuses scientific advances that would allow researchers to pursue the potentially life-saving work but also destroys human embryos.

Here is the ethical line and you can’t cross it says W.

“The Congress has sent me legislation that would compel American taxpayers, for the first time in our history, to support the deliberate destruction of human embryos,” Bush said.

Presidential candidate Senator Hillary Clinton didn’t waste any time to criticize the move.

“This is just one example of how the president puts ideology before science, politics before the needs of our families, just one more example of how out of touch with reality he and his party have become,” Sen. Hillary R. Clinton (D-N.Y.), said during a speech to Democratic activists in Washington just hours before Bush’s veto.

Rapper T-Pain is EVERYWHERE!

First, his single “Buy U A Drink (Shawty Snappin’)” peaked at number one on the Billboard singles chart and has dominated the R&B charts for the past 4 weeks. Then last week T-Pain beat Rihanna last week to have the number 1 album, Epiphany, in the country selling 171,000 copies.

That’s not all folks, his second single from Ephiphany, “Bartender” (featuring Akon), is already number 22 on the Hot 100 Billboard Charts. T-Pain’s croon can also be heard on the remix of Unk’s “2 Step,” the remix of DJ Khaled’s “We Takin’ Over,” and of course R. Kelly’s newest hit “I’m a Flirt” (T-Pain even speaks a little Spanish on the track).
